Who This Helps
This is for Product Managers who are tired of chasing numbers. If you're pulling data from three different places just to answer one question about your product's performance, this is for you. The Finance Basics for Operators course shows you how to build a system that works for you, not against you.
Mini Case
Sam, a PM at a growing SaaS company, spent 5 hours every Monday manually updating a revenue dashboard. It was a chore, and the data was always two days old. After setting up an automated report, that time dropped to 30 minutes of weekly review. The dashboard now updates daily on its own, giving her fresher context for her 9 AM standup. She turned a weekly headache into a quick check-in.
Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Pick your one key metric. What's the single number you get asked about most? Is it weekly active users, conversion rate, or monthly recurring revenue? Start there.
- Find the source. Where does that number live right now? Is it in Stripe, your database, or a Google Sheet? Just identify the one true source.
- Set a simple schedule. How often do you really need to see it? Daily? Weekly? Be honest—more frequent isn't always better.
- Let AI do the heavy lifting. Use a tool to connect your data source and auto-populate a report on your schedule. Your job is just to review the output.
- Share the link. Put the live report in a shared space (like your team's wiki) so everyone sees the same, current number. No more version confusion.
Avoid These Traps
- Don't boil the ocean. You don't need to automate every metric on day one. Start with one. Seriously, just one.
- Don't skip the 'why'. Before you automate, ask: "What decision will this number help us make?" If there's no clear answer, it might not be worth tracking.
- Avoid the 'set-and-forget' mindset. An automated report isn't a fire-and-forget missile. Schedule a 15-minute monthly check to ask if the metric is still the right one to track.
- Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Your first version will be simple. That's okay. A simple, automated report is better than a perfect, manual one you never finish.
Your Win by Friday
By this Friday, you can have one key product metric automatically pulled into a simple dashboard. You'll save those 5 hours you used to spend manually compiling it. You'll walk into your next meeting confident you're looking at the latest numbers, not last week's. That's less grunt work and more time for the decisions that actually move your product forward. Go on, give your future self the gift of time.
