Diagnose Your KPI Drop with a Data Reliability Baseline

By running one focused 45-minute diagnosis session, she traced it to a broken data pipeline that had been silently failing for 5 days. She fixed the source, not the symptom.

Do This Now (5 Steps)

  1. Block 45 minutes on your calendar. No distractions.
  2. Grab one KPI. Just one that dropped. Write down the exact number and time frame (e.g., 'Conversion down 12% since Tuesday').
  3. Map the data's path. From user action to your dashboard. List every system and transformation in between.
  4. Check each link. For each step on your map, ask: 'Did anything change here in the last 7 days?' Look for deployments, config updates, or partner API changes.
  5. Call your first witness. Based on step 4, message the one person closest to the most likely break. Ask them one specific question. Your detective work is already better than most.

Avoid These Traps

  • Chasing ghosts. Don't brainstorm 10 possible theories. Your map from step 3 gives you facts to investigate.
  • The 'data team black box.' Don't just file a ticket and wait. You mapped the path, so you can ask precise questions.
  • Fixing the dashboard. A visualization error is rare. Assume the data itself is wrong until you prove the pipeline is healthy.
  • Skipping the baseline. This is why the course mission stresses a Reliability Baseline scorecard. If you had one, you'd know which data sources have contracts and which are shaky. No more shooting in the dark.
