Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Find Your One Signal: Don't drown them in ten metrics. Ask: what is the single board-level signal for this cycle? Is it cash runway, net revenue retention, or gross margin? Pick one.
- Map the Triggers: For your key signal, define specific numerical triggers. Example: "If gross margin falls below 65% for two consecutive quarters..."
- Branch Your Actions: For each trigger, list the exact 2-3 actions you recommend. Be specific: "Pause contractor hires in the sales department" not "reduce spend."
- Frame the Tradeoff: Use a mission from the course: choose one capital allocation tradeoff and defend its expected impact. Example: "We shift $20k from branding to customer success, expecting a 5% lift in retention."
- Draft the One-Pager: Condense it all into a single-page board finance memo. Lead with the trigger, the action, and the expected outcome. Your work is about to get a lot more influential.
Avoid These Traps
- The Data Dump: Presenting every chart without a clear 'so what.' Your job is insight, not information transfer.
- Vague Recommendations: Saying "we should be careful with spend" gives no one a clear path. Recommend a specific, actionable guardrail.
- Surprising the Board: Never let a trigger hit without them knowing it was coming. Your scenario envelope prepares them for possible futures.
- Ignoring Tradeoffs: Every 'yes' is a 'no' to something else. Be explicit about what you're giving up with your recommendation—it builds huge credibility.
Your Win by Friday
By this Friday, define one clear runway trigger and its corresponding action branch for your current project. Write it in one sentence. For example: "If monthly active users drop by 10%, we will re-allocate $5k to reactivation campaigns." Share it with your manager to align on the decision framework before the analysis is even done. It’s like giving your future self a cheat code for stakeholder meetings.
