Who This Helps
You're a growth marketer who lives in dashboards but still gets asked "why did that happen?" every Monday. You want to move channel metrics without guesswork and turn your analysis into approved execution. This is for you.
Mini Case
Meet Maya. She manages 20 numbers every week and feels like she's drowning. Her team can't agree on what matters. Last quarter, she spent 7 days building a report that got ignored. Sound familiar?
Maya took the Metrics & Dashboards Basics course. She started with one North Star metric—conversion rate—and defined 3 supporting metrics with realistic targets. She built a weekly scoreboard with guardrails. In 2 weeks, her team approved her next campaign in 1 meeting instead of 3.
Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Pick one North Star metric. Choose the single number that tells you if your channel is healthy. For Maya, it was conversion rate. For you, it might be cost per acquisition or daily active users.
- Define 3 supporting metrics. These explain why your North Star moves. Think: traffic source, engagement rate, or churn. Set realistic targets—don't aim for 50% growth if last month was flat.
- Build a weekly scoreboard. List your North Star and supporting metrics in one view. Add guardrails: if a metric drops 12% below target, flag it. This stops the noise.
- Design a clear dashboard layout. Group metrics by theme. Put the most important number at the top. Use simple charts—no 3D pie charts that confuse everyone.
- Communicate insights in 3 sentences. When you present, say: "Here's what happened. Here's why. Here's what we do next." Stakeholders love clarity.
Avoid These Traps
- Tracking 20 numbers. You'll lose focus. Stick to 4-5 metrics max.
- Vague definitions. If "engagement" means different things to different people, your dashboard is useless. Define each metric clearly.
- No targets. Without targets, you can't tell if a 5% drop is bad or normal. Set them.
- Cluttered dashboards. Too many charts = too many questions. Keep it simple.
- Skipping guardrails. Alerts catch problems before they become crises. Use them.
Your Win by Friday
By Friday, you'll have one North Star metric, 3 supporting metrics with targets, and a weekly scoreboard that your team actually uses. No more guesswork. No more ignored reports. Just calm, confident decisions that get approved. (And maybe a little extra time for coffee.)
