Mei, a Junior Analyst at a mid-size e-commerce company, spent 7 days analyzing customer churn. She found that users who didn't complete onboarding in 3 days churned at 12% higher rate. She presented to the VP of Product. The VP said, "What do you mean by 'onboarding'? Does that include email verification?" Mei had no clear answer. The analysis was sent back for rework.

She defined "onboarding completion" as: user verified email + completed first tutorial + added one item to cart. She shared the contract with stakeholders before running numbers. Result? Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Pick one metric from your current analysis. For example, "active user."
- Write a one-sentence definition of that metric. Be specific. Include what counts and what doesn't.
- List the data sources you'll use. Table name, column, and any filters.
- Share the contract with your stakeholder before you run numbers. Ask: "Does this match what you need?"
- Get a sign-off in writing (Slack or email). Now your analysis has a clear scope.
Avoid These Traps
- Defining metrics alone. Always loop in the stakeholder. Their definition might surprise you.
- Using vague terms. "Recent" means nothing. Say "last 30 days."
- Skipping the contract. Without it, you'll redo work. Every time.
- Assuming data is clean. Check for nulls, duplicates, and outliers before you start.
- Presenting without context. Show the definition first. Then the numbers.
- Forgetting to update the contract. If scope changes, update the doc and re-share.
- Using jargon. Say "users who bought something" not "converted purchasers."
- Waiting until the end. Share the contract at the start. Not after 7 days of work.
