Who This Helps
You're a Product Manager drowning in questions. Which feature should we build next? Why did retention drop? Is this experiment worth scaling? You need answers, not more data. This ritual is for you and your ops teammates who want to turn product questions into measurable decisions. It's inspired by the Board Finance & Runway Narrative course, where leaders learn to build disciplined decision frameworks.
Mini Case
Meet Priya, a PM at a fast-growing SaaS company. Every Monday, she and her ops lead run a 30-minute analytics ritual. They check three things: weekly active users (up 12% this month), trial-to-paid conversion (stuck at 8%), and cash runway (18 months). Last quarter, they used a Runway Trigger Tree from the course to decide: if conversion stays below 10% for two weeks, pause the new onboarding experiment. It worked. They saved 3 weeks of dev time and 15% of their marketing budget.
Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Pick one question. What's the one product decision you're unsure about right now? Write it down. Example: "Should we invest in a mobile app?"
- Find your signal. What single number would tell you the answer? For the mobile app question, it might be daily active users on mobile web. That's your signal.
- Set a threshold. Decide: if the signal crosses this number, you act. For Priya, it was 10% trial-to-paid conversion. Make it concrete, like 12% growth or 7 days of decline.
- Schedule 30 minutes. Same day, same time every week. Block it on your calendar. Invite one ops teammate. No rescheduling.
- Review and decide. Look at your signal. Did it cross the threshold? If yes, take the action you planned. If no, wait one more week. That's it.
Avoid These Traps
- Looking at too many metrics. Pick one signal per question. More is noise.
- Changing the threshold every week. Stick with it for at least a month. Trust the process.
- Skipping the ritual. Consistency beats perfection. Even 15 minutes is better than zero.
- Deciding alone. Bring ops into the room. Different perspectives catch blind spots.
- Forgetting the "why." If you don't know why a metric moved, don't act. Investigate first.
Your Win by Friday
By Friday, you'll have one clear question, one measurable signal, and one threshold. You'll schedule your first 30-minute ritual for next Monday. That's it. One small habit that turns product questions into decisions. No more guessing. No more data paralysis. Just a simple, repeatable process that stabilizes your decisions across product and ops. And hey, you might even free up an afternoon for that feature you've been dying to build.
