Who This Helps
This is for junior analysts who spend hours on analysis but struggle to get their recommendations approved. You know the data is right, but stakeholders ask for more clarity. The Metrics & Dashboards Basics course is built for exactly this moment.
Mini Case
Maya, a junior analyst at a subscription service, tracked 20 numbers every week. Her boss kept asking, "What's the one thing we should do?" Maya enrolled in Metrics & Dashboards Basics. She picked her North Star Metric (weekly active users) and defined 3 supporting metrics: sign-up rate, churn rate, and average session time. She set a target: increase sign-ups by 12% in 7 days. Her weekly scoreboard now shows only these 4 numbers with guardrails. Her last recommendation (a simple A/B test on the sign-up page) got approved in one meeting.
Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Pick your North Star Metric. Choose one number that reflects the core value your team delivers. For Maya, it was weekly active users.
- Define 3 supporting metrics. These should explain why the North Star moves. Maya used sign-up rate, churn rate, and average session time.
- Set realistic targets. Use past data or industry benchmarks. Maya aimed for a 12% increase in sign-ups over 7 days.
- Build a weekly scoreboard. List your North Star, supporting metrics, and targets. Add guardrails (e.g., if churn rate exceeds 5%, flag it).
- Write one clear recommendation. Based on the scoreboard, suggest one action. Maya recommended an A/B test on the sign-up page.
Avoid These Traps
- Tracking too many numbers. Stick to 4-5 metrics max. More noise means less clarity.
- Vague targets. "Increase sign-ups" is not a target. "Increase sign-ups by 12% in 7 days" is.
- No guardrails. Without them, you miss red flags until it's too late.
- Skipping the recommendation. Analysis without action is just noise. Always end with a clear next step.
Your Win by Friday
By Friday, you'll have a weekly scoreboard with your North Star, 3 supporting metrics, targets, and guardrails. You'll write one recommendation that your stakeholder can approve in under 5 minutes. And you'll feel like a data superhero (cape optional).
