- Pick your single most important reliability metric from your baseline.
- Translate that metric into a business cost (time, money, missed opportunities).
- Draft a one-sentence story: "Because of [Metric State], we [Business Impact]."
- Identify the one stakeholder whose goals are most affected by this impact.
- Schedule a 15-minute chat with them to share this story, not a dashboard. Your goal is a conversation, not a presentation.
Avoid These Traps
- Don't lead with your process. Stakeholders care about outcomes, not your incident triage card details.
- Avoid jargon like "data contracts" or "SLOs" before establishing the shared problem.
- Don't present a list of 10 issues. Focus on the one that, if solved, unlocks the most value.
- Skipping the cost translation. "95% uptime" is abstract. "5% downtime cost us 50 sales leads last quarter" is concrete.
- Waiting for perfect data. Use your best available numbers and label them as estimates.
- Forgetting to ask for a specific next step. Always end with a clear, small ask.
- Doing all the talking. The magic happens when they start explaining the problem back to you.
- Letting one "no" stop the narrative. Different stakeholders speak different languages—adjust your story.
