Get Your Analysis Approved: Build a Metrics Charter

Do This Now (5 Steps)

  1. Pick Your North Star. Don't list ten metrics. Choose one ultimate measure of product success. Is it weekly active users? Revenue? Get specific.
  2. Add Two Guardrails. Your North Star needs bodyguards. If your North Star is revenue, a guardrail could be user satisfaction score. This keeps you from optimizing one number in a damaging way.
  3. Write the Definitions. For each metric (North Star + 2 guardrails), write one sentence anyone on the team would understand. No jargon.
  4. Diagnose One Segment. Before your next meeting, pick one user group (e.g., 'free tier users from email'). Chart their journey through one key action, like completing a profile.
  5. Lead with the Story. Start your update with the segment snapshot and what it means, not the raw data table. Connect it directly to your North Star.

Avoid These Traps

  • The Data Dump: Sending a spreadsheet with 20 tabs is not communication. It's avoidance. Pick the three most important numbers.
  • Jargon Jungle: Saying 'leveraged synergistic paradigms' will get you tuned out. Use plain language.
  • No Clear Ask: Every insight should lead to a recommendation. 'We should investigate' is not a recommendation. 'We should change the onboarding email for social media users' is.
  • Ignoring Guardrails: Pushing activation up by spamming users might work, but it will wreck your retention guardrail. Always check the side effects.
  • Forgetting the 'So What': Always, always explain why the number matters. Your stakeholder is busy. Do the thinking for them.
