Who This Helps
Founder operators who feel like every experiment is a coin flip. You have ideas, but you are not sure which one moves the needle. The Product Metrics Basics course gives you a simple system to pick the winner before you build.
Mini Case
Priya runs a SaaS tool. Her team had 3 experiment ideas: a new onboarding flow, a feature request button, and a faster checkout. She used the Activation Definition mission from the course. She defined activation as "user completes 1 key action within 7 days." Her current activation rate was 12%. She ran a quick segment snapshot and saw that users who did not activate in the first 3 days never came back. So she prioritized the onboarding flow experiment. Result? Activation jumped to 18% in two weeks. The other ideas could wait.
Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Pick one metric that matters most. Start with activation or retention. Do not try to fix everything at once.
- Define it clearly. Use the Activation Definition mission: one action, one time window, one set of steps. Write it down.
- Check your current number. What is your activation rate today? If you do not know, spend 30 minutes pulling the data.
- Find the biggest leak. Look at your segment snapshot. Where do users drop off? That is your experiment target.
- Run one experiment this week. Only one. Measure the impact on your chosen metric. If it works, keep it. If not, try the next leak.
Avoid These Traps
- Defining activation differently each week. Stick to one definition for at least 30 days.
- Running three experiments at once. You will not know what worked. Pick one.
- Ignoring retention. Activation without retention is a leaky bucket. Check retention after 7 days.
- Using averages. Segment your users. New vs. returning. Mobile vs. desktop. The leak hides in the segments.
- Waiting for perfect data. You have enough data now. Start with what you have.
Your Win by Friday
By Friday, you will have one clear experiment to run. You will know your activation rate, the biggest drop-off point, and the one change that could move it. No more guessing. Just a decision backed by real numbers. And hey, you might even free up an hour to grab coffee.
