Who This Helps
Founders and operators who feel stuck deciding what to build or test next. If you're looking at a dashboard full of numbers but can't see the clear path forward, this is for you. It's a core skill from the Product Metrics Basics course.
Mini Case
Priya's team saw a 40% activation rate and thought they were doing great. But when she ran a segment snapshot for users from organic search, she found their activation dropped to just 12%. That one cut revealed the entire leak was in the onboarding tutorial for that group. She fixed it in a week.
Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Pick your most important user segment. Think about your best customers or a group you're trying to grow.
- Define the 3 key steps they must take to reach your 'Activated' state.
- Pull the numbers for how many users in that segment complete each step. Use a 7-day window.
- Find the step with the biggest percentage drop. That's your leak.
- Brainstorm one experiment to fix that specific leak for that specific group. Your mission is now clear.
Avoid These Traps
- Don't look at overall averages. They hide the real problems in specific groups.
- Don't try to fix more than one step at a time. Focus is your superpower.
- Don't skip defining the steps. If you haven't defined activation, go build your definition card first.
- Don't get lost in perfect data. A good-enough snapshot today is better than a perfect one next month.
- Don't ignore tiny segments. Sometimes your future power users are a small group right now.
Your Win by Friday
By Friday, you'll have one clear experiment target. You'll know which segment you're helping, which step you're fixing, and have a simple hypothesis to test. You'll move from 'what should we do?' to 'let's run this.' It’s like finding the rip in your net instead of just wondering where all the fish are going.
