Do This Now (5 Steps)
- Grab your Metrics Charter. If you don't have one, that's your mission from the Product Metrics Basics course: define one North Star and two guardrail metrics.
- List every experiment idea your team is considering. Put them on a whiteboard or doc.
- For each idea, ask: "How will this move our North Star number?" If there's no clear, logical path, pause it.
- Then ask: "Could this hurt either of our two guardrail metrics?" If the risk is high, you need a mitigation plan before you start.
- Rank the remaining ideas by potential North Star impact and effort. The high-impact, lower-effort test goes first. That's your next experiment.
Avoid These Traps
- Don't let the loudest voice pick the next test. Let your North Star metric pick it.
- Don't skip the guardrail check. Winning on your main metric but breaking something else is a sideways move, not progress.
- Don't keep testing tiny tweaks (like button colors) if your core activation funnel is broken. Fix the big leaks first.
- Don't change your North Star every quarter. It's your compass; give it time to guide you.
- Don't run experiments without a clear hypothesis. "Let's see what happens" is not a strategy.
- Don't ignore segment data. A win for new users might be a loss for existing ones.
- Don't celebrate a metric win in a vacuum. Always check the guardrails.
- Don't let perfect data delay a good decision. Use the best you have now and iterate.
